This episode is dedicated to Helen M. Plummer aka Nonnie.  She worked at CVS. Though her relentless positivity and friendliness she became an icon at the University of Rhode Island.  Anyone who has ever shopped at the CVS near the Kingston RI campus knows the phrase "Have an excellent."  I hope wherever she is, she is having an excellent!

Episode 93: RIP Billy Hardwick

The PGA website posted the sad news that Hall of Fame bowler Billy Hardwick died November 16, 2013 of an apparent heart attack. I was able to meet him very briefly this year when I was in Tennessee to see his son Chris Hardwick perform. I feel like I have gotten to know him though the the stories Chis has told on the Nerdist Podcast. He clearly loved his family. He had some amazing achievements in the world of bowling. The world is poorer for loosing such a talented and passionate human being.

Let us take the time to celebrate the life of Billy Hardwick. Here is his appearance on the Nerdist podcast. He was delightful. It is a real gift to the world that Chris Hardwick recorded this intimately personal podcast with his Dad. http://www.nerdist.com/2012/06/nerdist-podcast-billy-hardwick/

This is a recent Nerdist podcast where Chris Hardwick talks about how his Mom and Dad started to talk to each other for the first time since the 1980's. It's really bitter sweet given the current news. It is comforting to know that before his death he was able to mend his relationship with Chris' Mom. http://www.nerdist.com/2013/10/nerdist-podcast-lucky-pen/

Billy Hardwick's Miller High Life Beer comercial. "My favorite tidbit about this is by far that fact that he was supposed to have lines and then take a swig, but quickly got too hammered after several takes. http://youtu.be/h_pDPhEk440

There is not much I can say that will make things easier for Chris. Just send him lots of hugs.

See the following article for Chris Hardwick's emotional and heartfelt tribute to his dad: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/19/chris-hardwick-billy-hardwick-goodbye_n_4302865.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003&utm_content=buffer21425&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer

Lyrics to Hold On, I'm Coming:

Hold On, I'm Coming

Don't you ever, be sad
Lean on me, hen times get bad
When the day come, and you know your down
In a river of trouble, your bout to drown

Hold on, cause I'm coming
Hold on, I'm coming

I'm on my way, your lover where
If your cold, I will be your cover
Never have to worry, because I am here
You dont need to suffer, cause I am near

Say
Hold on cause I'm coming
Hold on cause I'm coming
Hold on, cause I'm coming
Hold on, I'm coming

Lemme hear ya'll
You talk to me
For satisfaction, oh, hold on
Call my name, oh, call my name yeah for quick reaction
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Oh don't you ever,
oh don't you ever, be sad,
I want you to lean on me, when times get bad,
When the day comes, and I know you been around,
In a river o trouble, you you you you about to drown

Hold on I'm coming
Hold on cause I'm coming
Hold on cause I'm coming
Hold on I'm coming
(just hold on baby)
Hold on, I'm coming (here i come)
Hold on, I'm coming (take my hand)
Hold on, (dont you ever) I'm coming (here I come)

This week I am singing with Journey.  The URI Ram Band is playing a couple of their songs so I felt this would be a perfect time to never stop believing.  So Don't Stop Believing!

Lyrics:

Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere

Just a city boy
Born and raised in south Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere

A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice just one more time

Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlight people

Don't stop believin'
Hold on
Streetlight people

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlight people

Singing with from 10/11/2013 (I forgot to post it).

  • This song will always remind me of my many travels to see various Nerdist and Chris Hardwick events.  It's also a really fun song to sing.  Sara Watkins was on both the Nerdist and You Made It Weird.
  • Nerdist #263: http://www.nerdist.com/2012/09/nerdist-podcast-sara-watkins/
  • You Made It Weird #162: http://www.nerdist.com/2013/06/you-made-it-weird-162-sara-watkins/

This week's song is Sara Watkin's You and MeLyrics:

I remember the night
I remember the sound I remember the light When the moon came 'round
The night flowers bloomed The air so sweet
I remember you I remember me
Central Valley sunshine
Run out of town Make your head all funny
So you stick around
Dusty roads Make dirty feet
I remember you I remember me
I remember the night I remember the sound
I remember the light
When the moon came 'round
The night flowers bloomed
The air so sweet I remember you
I remember me
Wish I knew you now
Like I knew you then
For hours I just sit at your feet And listen
When I want To feel free
I remember you I remember me
I remember the night I remember the sound
I remember the light
When the moon came 'round
The night flowers bloomed
The air so sweet I remember you I remember me
Found myself at your place
When I was out walking I could hear your piano
And I swear I could hear you sing
And the joy we shared as we tarry there
I remember you I remember me
I remember the night I remember the sound
I remember the light
When the moon came 'round
The night flowers bloomed
The air so sweet
I remember you I remember me
I remember you I remember me
I remember you

Lyrics:

I've been sitting here thinking about gravity,Around the universe reaching out and grabbing me,
It's like everything's pulling me back to you.
I've been wondering if it's unreality,
or if somebody up there is glad at me,
it's like everything's pulling me back to you.
I don't need to see it, oh no,
I just got to believe it, you know,
And I know you can believe it too,
Cause it's true.
I've been staring at the night sky wondering,
What's really keepin' me under it,
It's like everything's pulling me back to you
(uhmmm hummm)
(bah bah, bah bah bah, bah bah, bah bah bah bah bah, bah bah bah bah)
I don't need to see it, oh no,
I just got to believe it, you know,
And I know you can believe it too,

Cause it's true.

I could just my eyes and deny you,
and not see skies of blue,
but you are everywhere.
But thinking about gravity,
reaching out and grabbing me,
and pulling me back to you.

  • From last week: The essence of last week's pod is the following: Give yourself a break, you are on a path of self-improvement. This path is full of hills and valleys. There are many bumps in the road so just keep going.
  • Characterize: Write three ridiculous "if-then" scenarios to strengthen decisions you've made.
  • Engineering Luck
  • Blind luck vs. Circumstantial Luck
  • Blind Luck is answering your front door to find a talking emu who brings you fortune and fame winning the lotto, having an event you didn't want to go to canceled due to bad weather
  • Circumstantial luck
  • YOU MAKE YOUR OWN LUCK
  • Characterize Write something that happened to you recently. Write one way it could be considered bad luck and one way it could be considered good luck, just to demonstrate how perception affects value. Write five "lucky" things that happened o you, then determine if they were blind luck or circumstantial luck.

Episode 51b: You gotta BE!

Originally I was going to name this episode: I'm telling you guys, it's not a cult! But I listened to the Nerdist Episode "Microwave Beef." They were talking about Chris' birthday party. Jonah's go to kareoke song is "You gotta be." I have not heard this song in ages but I have no been able to keep it out of my head. So I recorded it. Yes I included it on this episode. YOU are welcome. This is my craziest episode to date. I apologize for rambling but hopefully you have fun listening!

Thank you for listening! Remember, do not give up what you want most for what you want right now! Larry Miller returns in 2013---if the Myans were wrong! But we all know they were! Episode 47: Post Nerdist Live Blues

Post Nerdist Blues (I should write a song).

  • Met Patty Marvel (@pattymarvel) She a collaborator for my wordpress site and writes many intelligent comments on Nerdist.com.
  • Met Erika who is a friend of Tarah and Gillian. Tarah and Gillian dressed as Daleks. Everyone wanted their photos. It was very cool.
  • Ate dinner at Carmine's. Very good Italian food and very good conversation.
  • Nerdist show had no stand up but a very good conversation featuring Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beachman. (Joel Hodgman was also there)
  • I quemmented. I say my follow up quemment on this podcast. That's always the way eh?
  • I finally started covering the Nerdist Way. I talk about goals and milestones. I also reveal my character's name and it's origin.
  • HIMYM has started!!
  • Jonah Raydio: http://www.nerdist.com/2012/10/jonah-raydio-1-episode-2/

In this episode I explain my love for How I Met Your Mother. It is in its 8th season. People who love the show know why it is still on but other people are baffled as to the appeal. I shed some light on this subject. A quemment from DoctorQuemmento!!! I'm thrilled beyond all thrillness!

There were many anniversaries this week! I talk about a few of them. Drunk Hulk turns 3! Vladimere Putin turns 60! DiHard turns 1! I get emotional talking about Chris Hardwick's sobriety anniversary of 9 years!

Confession: I still have not watch Angels Take Manhattan.

Episode 45: Good Bye Yellow Brick Road

There are no spoilers for Angels Take Manhattan.  This is my good bye to Amy and Rory before I watch their final episode.  My favorite Amy episode is "The Girl who Waited."  It is not only a great story but an amazing acting job by Karen Gillan.

Episode 33: Taking my talents to Germany

Taking my talents to Germany: The decision.

What's up with me? or What's Wrong with me?

  1. I'm heading to Germany from July 4-22nd.  I will be releasing podcasts when I'm there. I'll get to use my snowball mic that I've had forever.
  2. I beat Diablo 3 on normal!  W00t! Yes it took me a while but we did it! I carried the group....for once!!

Joke of the week

Around the Pods

  1. Adam Carolla had LeVar Burton.  There wasn't much of a conversation with LaVar except for about Roots and Reading Rainbow.  They talked a bit about how he got into acting and how he got his first role in roots at the age of 19.  I hope LaVar is on Nerdist.  I would expect a more in depth conversation.  It is a mystery as to why Lavar called up Adam and told him to cut it out. Not a necessary episode if you are looking for some Lavar entertainment
  2. Nerdist has Billy West and John Dimaggio
    1. Billy west was recently on Adam Carolla: http://www.adamcarolla.com/billy-west/ This was so funny.  The interaction between Billy and Adam is priceless.  Worth the download.
    2. Billy West was on Rob Paulsen's Talkin' Toons #19 http://robpaulsenlive.com/episode-18-of-robs-weekly-podcast-is-out/
    3. Billy West was on an early Nerdist #49 http://www.nerdist.com/2010/12/nerdist-podcast-49-billy-west-not-ready-for-publication-yet/
    4. John Dimaggio was on the latest Rob Paulsen's Talkin' Toons #47 http://robpaulsenlive.com/episode-47-guest-john-dimaggio/

I'll be ending with a word from Larry Miller himself.  It was good to hear from him.  The sad part is that it sounds as if he'll be out for a while.  In the mean time please please please go and subscribe the This Week with Larry Miller.  His stories are great! Welcome to the third and final installment to the Post Nerdist LA show.

  1. The Duke Spirit: http://thedukespirit.com They played two songs. The first song was The Step and The Walk off their album Neptune.  The second was the new single off their album Glorious.  The band is straight up rock.  There are lots of heavy bass and drum beat.  The lead singer reminds me a bit of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship).  The Duke Spirit is an oasis In the world of over produced pop fluff and auto tuning.

You'd think I'd have this by now.  But I have the sense direction of Ryoga Hibiki from Ranma 1/2.
